The Weeknd

Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, The Weeknd and Frank Ocean, The Frank and Weeknd Ocean…any way you look at it, these two artists are leading the next wave of R&B, or as the experts now call it “Hipster R&B”. I don’t care what you call it, just make sure you call it GREAT MUSIC. I already talked about Mr. Ocean in another post, so this time around I’m going to focus on the other half of R&B’s new heroic tandem.

The Weeknd, nee Abel Tesfaye, is the next great talent out of Toronto that has managed to captivate the fickle tastes south of the border, and the stubborn home crowd. The first emotion that comes when listening to his 9-track mixtape “House of Balloons” , is lush milkiness. The sonic output of this album is real smooth, real powerful, real robust stuff. His sounds are reminscent of a new age Sade, mixed with some Beach House sampling, add a sprinkle of sultriness and you have a recipe mainly geared towards the fairer sex. The Weeknd has smashed all people’s expectations of what R&B should sound like in 2011, but in music, different is good, and in his case great.

The Weeknd came to popularity when fellow Torontonian Drake tweeted lyrics of his track “Wicked Games” also providing a link back to the song Drake’s own website. From there The Weeknd took care of the rest, grabbing people’s eardrums and never letting go. Considering our sports teams suck, it’s good to see something good coming out of the T-Dot.

Minnesota??!!

Minnesota aka Christian Bauhofer just made my day with one press of the play button. Roofback samples none other than the BAWSE himself, but flips it a la dubstep. Thumping synth’s, well laid lyrics, and that bounce that would make hoopties jump from the 305 all the way to the city of Angels.

Minnesota is kinda new on my dubstep radar, but with this intro I can tell you fo sho that this man will be among my summer lookouts. Is it just me or does dubstep and Rick Ross go together like Nutella and Bananas?? Answer is YES.

Shout out to the North Stars…

First name Theophilus!!

Now if any of you know me then you know that I have been pushing this dude and his music since he released “This Charming Mixtape” back in 2009. POP RAP RAW is, by his own definition, the type of music Mr. London delivers from his many locales across the globe. Raised in Brooklyn, despite what you may think from his name, this man has delivered some real good, ain’t no way you can’t dance, type music. He’s like a super melange between Stevie Wonder, Hall & Oates, and Q-Tip.

His newest single “Last name London” comes off his soon to be released 1st studio album Timez are weird these days. On this track he’s letting the whole world know who he is and what he’s bringing to the galaxy. Produced by John Hill (Santigold), this opening opus is a wham bam smasher for your ears and your chest. If this is your first time checking out Theophilus then I would recommend you download “This Charming Mixtape” his second mixtape “I want you” and his EP “Lover’s Holiday“, this should get you Theophilizing in no time. For now just check his latest single below. Last name London, first name Theophilus.

The West Coast has never been so soulful. Hailing from the other side of the Bay, Oakland, Mara Hruby is the latest songstress to takeover my Ipod. A beautiful talent in so many ways, Ms. Hruby has managed to effortlessly cover classic R&B tracks on her latest EP, From Her Eyes, which you can download here.

I will let you guys figure out the covers yourselves, just do not sleep on this throwback from a time forgotten. Check out one of my favorite tracks off the EP below.

Nah this ain’t Danny Ocean’s latest scheme to become a billionaire, but this cat is almost as cool. Frank Ocean is the latest member of the OFWGKTA crew to come out and captivate the hip hop/r&b world (think Tyler the Creator but a thousand times less vulgar).

Nostalgia,Ultra is Mr. Ocean’s first venture into the mixtape world, and it is exactly that…Nostalgic. I’m calling it now, this man will bring R&B back. No word if the Bimmer on the front of his mixtape cover is actually his.

Check out one of my favorite Oceanic cuts from his mixtape below.
