The Weeknd

Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, The Weeknd and Frank Ocean, The Frank and Weeknd Ocean…any way you look at it, these two artists are leading the next wave of R&B, or as the experts now call it “Hipster R&B”. I don’t care what you call it, just make sure you call it GREAT MUSIC. I already talked about Mr. Ocean in another post, so this time around I’m going to focus on the other half of R&B’s new heroic tandem.

The Weeknd, nee Abel Tesfaye, is the next great talent out of Toronto that has managed to captivate the fickle tastes south of the border, and the stubborn home crowd. The first emotion that comes when listening to his 9-track mixtape “House of Balloons” , is lush milkiness. The sonic output of this album is real smooth, real powerful, real robust stuff. His sounds are reminscent of a new age Sade, mixed with some Beach House sampling, add a sprinkle of sultriness and you have a recipe mainly geared towards the fairer sex. The Weeknd has smashed all people’s expectations of what R&B should sound like in 2011, but in music, different is good, and in his case great.

The Weeknd came to popularity when fellow Torontonian Drake tweeted lyrics of his track “Wicked Games” also providing a link back to the song Drake’s own website. From there The Weeknd took care of the rest, grabbing people’s eardrums and never letting go. Considering our sports teams suck, it’s good to see something good coming out of the T-Dot.
